How to get to Tuscany

The two main airports for Tuscany are in Pisa and Florence. The two airports are only 80kms apart and Pisa is the busier airport of the two. Both receive international flights.

The main cities in Tuscany have train stations and the stations tend to be located in the town centres. However, once you move outside of those main town centres – and several of the loveliest Tuscany boutique hotels are outside main towns – I highly recommend hiring a car to get around.

When to visit Tuscany

The best times of year to visit Tuscany are between April and June and September and October. The weather is generally warm but not too hot, everything will be open and the crowds are not as big as they are in the peak months of July and August.

Personally, I would avoid visiting Tuscany in July and August. It can be extremely warm but worst of all it will be very busy. Visiting the most popular towns in Tuscany like lovely but car free Siena can be quite stressful particularly if you are driving.

It is possible to visit Tuscany between November and March. Temperatures don’t drop too much below 11 degrees celsius during the day. Christmas in Tuscany is quite a popular event and prices can escalate during this time.
