Fall Travel is Shrinking, and That’s Actually Good News for Grown-Up Getaways

Long, leisurely fall vacations are giving way to something different. New data from Airbnb shows that this autumn, more American travelers than ever are choosing quick weekend trips over extended getaways, with weekend travel now outpacing every other season of the year.

The Weekend Takeover

Sixty percent of survey respondents say they’re planning a weekend getaway this fall, and search interest in terms like fall foliage, leaf peeping, apple picking and fall road trip is climbing compared to last year. More weekend trips happened in fall 2025 than in any other season, and Airbnb’s booking data shows that pattern accelerating into 2026.

For the seasoned traveler, this shift has an upside. A tighter window means less time wasted and more intention behind each stop. Airbnb’s top trending weekend destinations for fall 2026 lean heavily into scenic drives, foliage and unhurried small-town charm, exactly the kind of trip that rewards a traveler who wants depth over ground covered.

A Different Kind of Small-Town Travel

While much of the report’s small-town narrative is framed around Gen Z chasing quirky local legends, the underlying data points to something broader: American travelers are increasingly drawn to under-the-radar towns with genuine character over predictable, oversaturated destinations. Places like Leavenworth, Washington, a former logging town reinvented as a full Bavarian village with alphorn concerts and authentic cuckoo clocks, or Rapid City, South Dakota, known for its life-size bronze statues of US presidents lining downtown sidewalks, offer the kind of specific, story-driven character that rewards travelers who like to dig into a place rather than just pass through it.

Stadiums and Venues Are Becoming Destinations in Their Own Right

A new travel pattern Airbnb is calling “groundhopping” is also on the rise: the practice of visiting stadiums, arenas and music venues as landmarks worth traveling for on their own merits, separate from any particular game or show. Nearly 70 percent of survey respondents say the trend appeals to them, a pattern that took hold this summer amid record numbers of soccer fans traveling across North America. Destinations built around famous venues, from London and Toronto to Green Bay and Boston, are seeing rising interest as travelers plan trips around iconic stadiums and concert halls rather than a single event date.

What This Means for Fall Planning

The throughline across all three trends is the same: shorter trips, planned around something specific, whether that’s a foliage drive, a town with real history, or a landmark venue. For travelers who already know how to make the most of a long weekend, this fall’s data suggests the crowds may finally be catching up to that instinct.
