Global searches for luxury destinations have climbed 614 percent over the past five years, and a new index shows exactly where that appetite is being rewarded. Travel experts at Iglu Cruise analyzed the concentration of luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants and premium tours across major cities worldwide, then ranked each by an overall luxury density score. The result puts a tiny Mediterranean principality ahead of some of the most storied names in travel.
Monaco Takes the Crown
Monaco topped the index with a 42 percent luxury score, driven largely by its extraordinary concentration of premium tours and experiences. The principality has built its reputation on Mediterranean glamour, the Formula 1 Grand Prix and a casino scene that has drawn the world’s elite for generations. Within its compact borders, travelers can stay at the historic Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo, dine at Alain Ducasse’s Le Louis XV, or charter a superyacht from Port Hercule before browsing the Golden Square’s designer boutiques.

Switzerland Claims Two Spots in the Top Four
Zurich landed in second place, its financial hub reputation now matched by private helicopter excursions over the Alps and exclusive watchmaking workshops. The Bahnhofstrasse remains one of the world’s most exclusive shopping streets, and the Baur au Lac has hosted royalty for more than a century. Geneva followed in fourth, offering a quieter, more understated luxury built around lakefront promenades, bespoke craftsmanship and private yacht cruises across the water, with the Jet d’Eau fountain as a permanent backdrop.
The Riviera Holds Strong
Cannes secured third place on the strength of its yacht culture and celebrity pull, with the Hôtel Martinez and Carlton Cannes anchoring the waterfront and private boat trips to the Îles de Lérins rounding out the experience. Along the Croisette, fine dining and high fashion sit side by side, reinforcing why the French Riviera continues to punch above its size in these rankings.
Old World Cities Still Dominate
Florence placed fifth, its Renaissance architecture and artisan craftsmanship pairing with private vineyard tours in Chianti and after-hours access to the Uffizi Gallery for those willing to arrange it. Paris came in sixth, still anchored by Le Bristol and The Ritz, though its lower fine dining percentage relative to its luxury hotel density kept it behind several smaller destinations. Milan, in eighth, leaned on its fashion capital status, with the Armani Hotel Milano and Quadrilatero della Moda drawing travelers who want their luxury tailored.
New World Cities Round Out the List
Sydney claimed seventh place, its harbor setting complemented by Crown Sydney and dining with Opera House views at Quay. New York landed in ninth despite its high concentration of luxury hotels, held back by a comparatively small share of premium tours. Cape Town closed out the top 10, its position between Table Mountain and the Atlantic backing striking properties like The Silo Hotel and wine tasting in nearby Franschhoek.
