Americans Are Paying More for Adventure Travel Than Almost Anywhere Else on Earth, and a New Global Ranking Proves It

Adventure travel is booming, and a new worldwide ranking has just revealed which countries offer the best thrills for the money. The results should make any American thinking about a bucket-list adventure trip stop and reconsider exactly where that money is going.

A new study from Casino Days ranked the world’s top 20 adventure destinations, scoring each country across urban, outdoor, water and snow-based thrills. The United States landed at number 10, and the reason it did not rank higher has nothing to do with a lack of excitement.

Where the US delivers, and where it costs travelers the most

The United States posted the highest urban thrill score of any country in the entire study, at 9.90 out of 10. That means more roller coasters, more skydiving locations and more high-adrenaline city experiences than anywhere else on the list.

Water adventures scored well too, coming in at 9.31, reflecting the country’s vast coastlines and inland waterways. Even outdoor adventure, at 8.54, held its own against destinations known for rugged wilderness.

Despite all that, one number quietly dragged the country’s overall ranking down. The United States posted the highest monthly cost of living of any destination in the entire study, at roughly $1,873 for a single traveler. That is more expensive than the UK, more expensive than Canada, and more expensive than every other country in the top 20.

South America’s dominance is no accident

Look closely at the top of the table and a pattern emerges immediately. Four of the top nine spots belong to South American countries, and none of them carry a monthly cost of living above $925.

Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Chile all combine strong outdoor and water scores with some of the lowest living costs in the entire study. Colombia, in particular, stands out as a value play, landing at number eight overall with a cost of living of just $674 a month, less than half of Turkey and a third of the US figure.

This is not simply a case of cheaper countries scoring better by default. Portugal, at number 13, and Greece, at number 16, both carry moderate living costs yet still trail the South American contenders on overall adrenaline score. The continent appears to offer a genuine combination of geography, infrastructure and affordability that is difficult to replicate elsewhere.

Western Europe proves thrills do not have to break the bank, up to a point

France and Italy both landed inside the top six, a result that will surprise nobody who has hiked the Alps or climbed through the Dolomites. France posted the highest snow score of any country in the top ten, at 9.55, while Italy matched it closely at 9.67, the highest snow score in the entire study.

What is notable is that both countries achieved this while carrying a cost of living well below the United States, at $1,338 and $1,271 respectively. For travelers drawn to by four season adventure, from summer coastal hikes to winter alpine climbing, these two countries offer a rare combination of variety and relative value that is hard to find outside Europe.

Germany and Poland, both mid-table finishers, tell a similar story. Neither ranks among the cheapest destinations, but both deliver strong urban and outdoor scores without approaching American price levels.

Why the UK and Canada both slipped down the list

The UK and Canada share more in common than their positions on the list suggest. Both countries scored well across the board, with the UK posting a 9.59 urban score and Canada an equally strong 9.27, yet both were held back by living costs among the highest in the study, at $1,653 and $1,640 respectively.

Canada’s case is particularly striking given its snow score of 8.80, one of the strongest in the entire ranking and a reflection of its vast network of ski resorts and ice climbing routes. Despite that natural advantage, the cost of accessing it kept the country out of the top ten entirely.

The pattern across the data is consistent. Wherever a country’s cost of living climbs above roughly $1,300 a month, its overall adrenaline score tends to slip regardless of how strong its raw activity numbers are. Affordability is functioning almost as a tax on adventure, and the countries topping the list are the ones that have largely avoided it.

What this means for adventurous travelers over 50

For seasoned travelers who have built a lifelong appetite for authentic, activity-led experiences, this data confirms a trend worth paying attention to. The richest adventure destinations are increasingly found outside the most expensive, familiar circuits.

Travelers chasing variety across seasons may find France and Italy deliver the broadest range of experiences without the price tag of North America. Those prioritizing value above all else will find Brazil, Argentina and Colombia hard to beat, each combining serious adrenaline credentials with living costs a fraction of what the same experiences would cost at home.
