It is a double decker iron arc bridge that sits over the River Douro. It opened in 1886 and at th etie was the longest bridge of its kind, spanning 172 metres.

Its exterior stone carvings are its most attractive characteristic so Belem Tower is best seen from the land or from the water. The top floor has some decent views.
