Namibia is a country of jaw-dropping beauty – and I was particularly blown away by the colours. These colours are particularly vivid in the amazing Kalahari Desert and Fish River Canyon. Visiting these areas are two of the best things to do in Namibia. Here’s my travel guide to these amazing destinations:
Things to do in Namibia: The Kalahari Desert
The reds, in particular, are the most stunning shades of red that I have ever seen. And nowhere is this as clear as it is in the Kalahari Desert.
Namibia is lucky enough to have two deserts – the Namib Desert and then in the east and south the Kalahari Desert. The Kalahari receives more rain than a desert should so it has a more golden, grassy appearance. The word Kalahari means Wilderness.
Whilst there I stayed at the fantastic Bagatelle Ranch. What a wonderful place! It is very far from the rest of the world but a stunning location. The rooms are lovely and the food is great but the highlight is some of the tame animals who frequent the ranch. Several are just hanging around the ranch like the meerkats, several are behind fences and then of course when it is feeding time out come the Cheetahs!
The accommodation is fantastic stilt chalets that offer wonderful views across the desert. They feature all the modern comforts you could need. You can do a game drive to see the cheetahs and enjoy a sundowner and a stunning sunset. You can also do a game drive at night – and afterwards look up at the amazing views of the stars on offer. Or perhaps go walking with Bushmen or take advantage of a horseback safari? Whatever you do don’t forget your camera as the Kalahari is incredibly photogenic.
Things to do in Namibia: Fish River Canyon
Namibia is just amazing – an extraordinary landscape of stunning natural beauty and it is so empty! Just miles and miles and miles of land as far as the eye can see. Empty land. And once you have travelled a long way on the long straight roads south you will get to Fish River Canyon.
Amazingly Fish River Canyon is the second biggest canyon in the world – second to the Grand Canyon of course. But I believe it’s visitor numbers are a lot lower as it takes some effort to get there. But once you do it is amazing!
I would highly recommend you stay at the Canon Lodge. This place is fantastic. Many of the rooms are built into the rocks around the canyons. And importantly the food is fantastic! Also you have very little choice as there are not many hotels in the area!
The hotel will also help guide you as to where to go to watch the sunset. The sunsets over Fish River Canyon are amazing so I highly recommend getting yourself in place with a gin and tonic to enjoy one each night!
Another activity you can do is to visit the Ai Ais Hot Springs. It’s a decent drive but a scenic one and you can enjoy the springs.
There is must do thing to do in Namibia – take a plane trip over Fish River Canyon. It is the only way to experience how vast and beautiful it is. This plane trip was a huge highlight. We didn’t hike the canyon so there is only so much you can see by driving to look out points. The plane is definitely the way to go.
